Sing to Yahweh a new song! Sing to Yahweh, all the earth.
2Sing to Yahweh! Bless his name! Proclaim his salvation from day to day!
3Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples.
4For great is Yahweh, and greatly to be praised! He is to be feared above all gods.
5For all the gods of the nations are idols, but Yahweh made the heavens.
6Honor and majesty are before him. Strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.
7Ascribe to Yahweh, you families of nations, ascribe to Yahweh glory and strength!
8Ascribe to Yahweh the glory due to his name! Bring an offering, and come into his courts.
9Worship Yahweh in holy array. Tremble before him, all the earth!
10Say among the nations, "Yahweh reigns!" The world is also established. It can't be moved. He will judge the peoples with equity.
11Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice! Let the sea roar, and the fullness of it!
12Let the field and all that is in it exult! Then all the trees of the forest shall sing for joy
13before Yahweh; for he comes, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with his truth.

Summary

Psalm 96 is one of the great universal praise psalms — a summons to all the earth, all families of nations, and all creation to sing and declare Yahweh's glory. The "new song" reflects a new act of salvation deserving new praise. The idols of the nations are nothing; Yahweh made the heavens. The psalm closes with a breathtaking vision: heavens glad, earth rejoicing, sea roaring, fields exulting, forest trees singing — all because Yahweh comes to judge the earth with righteousness and truth.

Themes

  • The new song as a response to new acts of salvation
  • The universal mission: declaring God's glory among all nations
  • The comparison of Yahweh with all other gods — he alone made the heavens
  • Creation's joy at the coming of the just Judge
  • Judgment as the reason for universal rejoicing, not fear

Key verses

  • Ps 96:1-3 — “Sing to Yahweh a new song! Declare his glory among the nations!”
  • Ps 96:10 — “Say among the nations, 'Yahweh reigns!' He will judge the peoples with equity.”
  • Ps 96:12-13 — “Then all the trees of the forest shall sing for joy before Yahweh, for he comes to judge the earth.”

Context & background

Psalm 96 appears almost identically in 1 Chronicles 16:23-33, sung when the ark was brought to Jerusalem. Its command to "say among the nations, 'Yahweh reigns'" is the core missionary proclamation of the enthronement psalms. The "new song" (v. 1) appears in Psalms 33:3, 40:3, 98:1, 144:9, 149:1, and Revelation 5:9, 14:3 — always marking a new redemptive act that demands a fresh response. The rejoicing of creation at God's coming judgment (vv. 11-13) is surprising: judgment is not a threat to creation but its longed-for restoration. Romans 8:19-21 describes creation "groaning" for this very moment.
