Summary
Psalm 112 is the companion acrostic to Psalm 111 — where 111 portrays God's character and deeds, Psalm 112 portrays the blessed man who fears the Lord. The attributes given to God in Psalm 111 are now reflected in the righteous man: graciousness, mercy, righteousness, giving to the poor. The righteous man is not afraid of evil news because his heart is anchored in trust. The psalm ends with a sharp contrast: the righteous man's horn is exalted, while the wicked man's desire perishes.
Themes
- The blessed life rooted in fear and delight in God's commands
- The image-bearing quality of the righteous: they reflect God's own attributes
- Unshakeable steadfastness as the mark of the God-fearer
- Generosity as a defining characteristic of the righteous
- The sharp contrast between the righteous and the wicked at the end

Context & background
Psalm 112's literary artistry lies in its deliberate echoing of Psalm 111. In Psalm 111, God's righteousness "endures forever" (v. 3); in Psalm 112, the righteous man's righteousness "endures forever" (vv. 3, 9). In 111, God is "gracious and merciful" (v. 4); in 112, the righteous man is "gracious, merciful, and righteous" (v. 4). This is the biblical theology of image-bearing: those who fear God come to reflect God's character. Paul quotes verse 9 in 2 Corinthians 9:9 in the context of encouraging generous giving — "he has scattered abroad his gifts to the poor; his righteousness endures forever." The phrase "not afraid of evil news" (v. 7) is extraordinarily relevant in any age of constant unsettling information — the ground of peace is not circumstances but a heart anchored in God.
