Yahweh, remember David and all his afflictions,
2how he swore to Yahweh, and vowed to the Mighty One of Jacob:
3"Surely I will not come into the structure of my house, nor go up into my bed,
4I will not give sleep to my eyes, or slumber to my eyelids,
5until I find out a place for Yahweh, a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob."
6Behold, we heard of it in Ephrathah. We found it in the field of Jaar.
7"Let us go into his dwelling place. Let us worship at his footstool."
8Arise, Yahweh, into your resting place, you and the ark of your strength.
9Let your priests be clothed with righteousness. Let your saints shout for joy.
10For your servant David's sake, don't turn away the face of your anointed one.
11Yahweh has sworn to David in truth. He will not turn from it: "I will set the fruit of your body on your throne.
12If your children will keep my covenant and my testimony that I will teach them, their children also will sit on your throne forevermore."
13For Yahweh has chosen Zion. He has desired it for his habitation.
14"This is my resting place forever. I will live here, for I have desired it.
15I will abundantly bless her provision. I will satisfy her poor with bread.
16I will also clothe her priests with salvation. Her saints will shout aloud for joy.
17There I will make the horn of David to bud. I have prepared a lamp for my anointed.
18I will clothe his enemies with shame, but on himself, his crown will shine."

Summary

Psalm 132 is the great psalm of the Davidic covenant and the dwelling of God — the longest of the Psalms of Ascent. It recounts David's vow to find a resting place for God, the bringing of the ark to Zion, and then God's response: his eternal choice of Zion as his dwelling and the Davidic line as his anointed. The divine oath "I will set the fruit of your body on your throne" (v. 11) is the covenant foundation for all messianic hope. "I will prepare a lamp for my anointed" (v. 17) points toward the fulfillment in Christ.

  • God's response: choosing Zion as his eternal dwelling
  • The Davidic covenant as the ground of all messianic hope

  • The horn and lamp of David pointing toward the coming anointed one

Context & background

Psalm 132 reflects the historical events of 2 Samuel 6-7 — the bringing of the ark to Jerusalem and God's covenant with David. The ark of the covenant had wandered for decades — first captured by the Philistines, then at Kirjath-jearim ("field of Jaar," v. 6, located in the hill country of modern Israel). David's vow (vv. 3-5) reflects his consuming passion to provide a permanent home for God's presence — even before building his own palace. God's oath (vv. 11-12) constitutes the Davidic covenant, which the prophets would develop into the messianic vision. Acts 2:30-31 quotes verse 11 to show that Peter understood the Davidic covenant as fulfilled in Jesus's resurrection. "The horn of David" (v. 17) is the image of power and honor bursting forth in the coming anointed king.
