The Covenant of Circumcision

Summary
God appears to Abram at age ninety-nine, renews and expands the covenant, and changes his name from Abram ("exalted father") to Abraham ("father of a multitude"). God institutes circumcision as the sign of the covenant and changes Sarai's name to Sarah, promising her a son within a year. Abraham laughs inwardly at the impossibility, and pleads for Ishmael — but God clarifies that the covenant will run through Isaac, the son Sarah will bear. Abraham immediately circumcises all the males in his household.

Context & background
Thirteen years have passed since the birth of Ishmael (Gen 16:16) — a long silence from God. The appearance here introduces the name El Shaddai (God Almighty), traditionally understood as "God of the mountains" or "God who is all-sufficient." Name changes in the ancient world were serious events, marking a fundamental change in identity and destiny. Circumcision as a covenant sign was not unique in the ancient Near East, but its meaning and context here are unique — it is a mark of belonging to God's covenant people. The name Isaac means "he laughs" — a reminder of Abraham's incredulous laughter that becomes joyful fulfillment.
