Households and the Armor of God

Summary
Paul completes the household code by addressing children, fathers, servants, and masters, urging all to serve "as to the Lord" with the awareness that the heavenly Master shows no partiality. He then turns to the cosmic conflict: believers must be strong in the Lord and put on the whole armor of God — truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, and the word of God — to stand against the schemes of the devil. The letter closes with a call to constant prayer, Paul's request for boldness in his chains, news through Tychicus, and a benediction of peace and grace.

Context & background
Paul wrote Ephesians c. AD 60-62 from prison in Rome (modern Italy) — likely under house arrest with a Roman soldier chained to him, which may have inspired the armor imagery in this chapter. The letter was sent to the church at Ephesus (modern western Turkey, near Selçuk), a city deeply involved in magic, occult practices, and the worship of Artemis (Acts 19), making the warning about spiritual forces especially relevant. Tychicus (v. 21), an Asian companion of Paul (Acts 20:4), likely carried this letter along with Colossians and Philemon.
