Summary
Paul opens Ephesians with a soaring blessing that traces salvation from eternity past — God's choice and predestination — through the present redemption purchased by Christ's blood and the sealing of the Holy Spirit, all the way to a future inheritance. He then prays that believers would have their spiritual eyes opened to grasp the hope of their calling and the immeasurable power that raised Christ from the dead. That same Christ, now exalted above every authority, has been given as head over all things to the church, his body.

Context & background
Paul wrote Ephesians around AD 60-62 while imprisoned in Rome (modern Italy). The letter was addressed to believers in Ephesus, a major port city on the western coast of Asia Minor (modern western Turkey, near Selçuk) and home to the temple of Artemis, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Some early manuscripts lack "at Ephesus," suggesting the letter may have circulated as a general epistle to multiple churches across the Roman province of Asia. Chapter 1 reads almost like a hymn, with verses 3-14 forming a single long sentence in the original Greek that praises the Father, Son, and Spirit.
