Summary
David sends a delegation to comfort the new Ammonite king Hanun on the death of his father, but Hanun's advisors convince him that this is espionage. He humiliates David's envoys by shaving half their beards and cutting their garments short. This insult triggers a war in which Ammon hires a massive mercenary coalition from Aram (Syria). Joab and Abishai divide their forces and rout the combined enemy through bold strategy and trust in God. David then personally leads a second campaign and defeats the Aramean reinforcements, ending Syria's support for Ammon.

Context & background
Ammon (modern central Jordan, with its capital Rabbah at modern Amman) was a neighboring nation east of the Jordan River that had intermittent conflict with Israel. The shaving of beards and cutting of garments was an extreme humiliation in the ancient Near East — a beard was a symbol of manhood and honor, and half-shaved envoys would be laughingstocks. Aram (modern Syria) and its allied kingdoms from Mesopotamia (modern northern Iraq/Syria) were powerful mercenary forces of the era. Joab's famous battle cry — "Yahweh will do what seems good to him" — is a model of bold action combined with genuine submission to God's sovereignty.
