Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, and masons, and carpenters, to build him a house.
2David perceived that Yahweh had established him king over Israel; for his kingdom was exalted on high, for his people Israel's sake.
3David took more wives at Jerusalem; and David became the father of more sons and daughters.
4Now these are the names of the children whom he had in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon,
5Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet,
6Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia,
7Elishama, Beeliada, and Eliphelet.
8When the Philistines heard that David was anointed king over all Israel, all the Philistines went up to seek David; and David heard of it, and went out against them.
9Now the Philistines had come and made a raid in the valley of Rephaim.
10David inquired of God, saying, "Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will you deliver them into my hand?" Yahweh said to him, "Go up; for I will deliver them into your hand."
11So they came up to Baal Perazim, and David struck them there; and David said, "God has broken my enemies by my hand, like the breaking forth of waters." Therefore they called the name of that place Baal Perazim.
12They left their gods there; and David gave commandment, and they were burned with fire.
13The Philistines made yet another raid in the valley.
14David inquired of God again; and God said to him, "You shall not go up after them: turn away from them, and come on them opposite the mulberry trees.
15When you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the mulberry trees, then go out to battle; for God has gone out before you to strike the army of the Philistines."
16David did as God commanded him; and they struck the army of the Philistines from Gibeon even to Gezer.
17The fame of David went out into all lands; and Yahweh brought the fear of him on all nations.

Summary

Chapter 14 records three signs of God's blessing on David's growing kingdom: the building of his palace with Hiram of Tyre's help, the growth of his family in Jerusalem, and two decisive military victories over the Philistines. Crucially, David inquires of God before each battle — and God gives different tactical instructions each time. The chapter ends with David's fame spreading to all nations as a result of God fighting for him.

Themes

  • Seeking God's specific guidance before every major decision
  • God as the true source of victory and success
  • The multiplication of blessing as God establishes David's kingdom

Context & background

Hiram I of Tyre (modern Tyre, Lebanon, ~40 km south of Sidon) was a Phoenician king famous for cedar forests and skilled craftsmen. His alliance with David (and later Solomon) gave Israel access to premium building materials unavailable in the hill country of Canaan. The Valley of Rephaim (southwest of modern Jerusalem) was a key invasion corridor for the Philistines, who were based in the coastal plain of modern Israel. The Chronicler's placement of this chapter between the two Ark episodes (chapters 13 and 15) shows how David grew in wisdom: he inquires of God before battle here, and in chapter 15 he corrects his mistake by properly consulting God about how to move the Ark.
