Summary

David's first attempt to bring the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem ends in disaster. The Ark had been neglected during Saul's reign and was being transported improperly on a cart (like the Philistines had done) instead of being carried by Levites on poles as God commanded. When the oxen stumble and Uzzah reaches out to steady the Ark, God strikes him dead. David stops the procession in fear and places the Ark in the home of Obed-edom, where it brings blessing for three months.

Themes

  • The holiness of God and the danger of treating sacred things carelessly
  • The importance of seeking God according to his revealed will
  • Blessing that comes to those who honor God's presence

Key verses

  • 1 Chr 13:10 — “The anger of Yahweh was kindled against Uzzah, and he struck him, because he put out his hand to the ark; and he died there before God.”
  • 1 Chr 13:14 — “The ark of God remained with the family of Obed Edom in his house three months; and Yahweh blessed the house of Obed Edom, and all that he had.”
  • 1 Chr 13:3 — “Let us bring the ark of our God back to us; for we didn't seek it in the days of Saul.”

Context & background

The Ark of the Covenant had been captured by the Philistines (1 Samuel 4–5), returned to Israel, and had rested at Kiriath-jearim (modern Abu Ghosh, Israel, ~10 km west of Jerusalem) for about 70 years during Saul's reign. The Chronicler contrasts Saul's neglect of the Ark with David's desire to restore it to a central place in national worship. The fatal error was transporting the Ark on a cart — copying Philistine practice (1 Samuel 6:7-8) — rather than following God's explicit command in Numbers 4 that Kohathite Levites carry it on their shoulders using poles. Obed-edom was from Gath (a Philistine city in modern Israel), making his blessing especially notable.

Cross-references

  • 1 Chronicles 15:2,13 — David learns from this mistake; only Levites to carry the Ark
  • 1 Samuel 6:1-7 — The Philistines use a cart to return the Ark — the mistaken model David copied
  • 2 Samuel 6:1-11 — Parallel account of Uzzah's death
  • Numbers 4:15 — Kohathites must not touch the holy things or they will die
  • Numbers 7:9 — The ark must be carried on shoulders, not on a cart
