Summary
After a twenty-year oppression under Jabin of Hazor and his general Sisera with his nine hundred iron chariots, God raises up Deborah — a prophetess and judge — who summons Barak to lead Israel in battle at Mount Tabor. When Barak hesitates, Deborah declares that a woman will receive the honor of the victory. Israel routs Sisera's forces at the Kishon River, and Sisera flees to the tent of Jael, a Kenite woman, who kills him with a tent peg while he sleeps — fulfilling Deborah's prophecy.

Context & background
The events of Judges take place throughout Canaan — modern Israel, West Bank, and parts of Jordan and Lebanon. The battle took place at the foot of Mount Tabor (modern northern Israel, overlooking the Jezreel Valley) and along the Kishon River (modern Nahal Kishon in northern Israel). Hazor was a major city in northern Canaan, now Tel Hazor in modern northern Israel near the Sea of Galilee. The Jezreel Valley — the broad plain between the hills of Galilee and Samaria — was ideal terrain for Sisera's chariot forces. The Kenites were a nomadic clan descended from Moses' father-in-law, maintaining a somewhat neutral political position.
