In the coming day, a cleansing fountain will be opened for God's people, washing away sin and uncleanness. Context & background
Zechariah ministered in Jerusalem (modern Israel) after the return from Babylonian exile (modern central Iraq), and his later oracles (chapters 9-14) move into highly apocalyptic territory. Chapter 13 continues the "in that day" oracles, looking past the prophet's own time to a future day of cleansing and judgment for the covenant people. Verse 7 was directly quoted by Jesus on the night of his arrest at Gethsemane on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem (Matthew 26:31), identifying himself as the smitten shepherd. The "wounds between your arms" (v. 6) reflects the self-inflicted cuts associated with pagan prophets in the ancient Near East (compare 1 Kings 18:28).
