Summary
A mighty angel announces the complete fall of Babylon the Great, now a dwelling place of demons. A voice from heaven calls God's people to come out of her so they don't share in her sins or her plagues. Three groups mourn her destruction — the kings who shared her immorality, the merchants who grew rich on her luxury, and the sailors who profited from her trade — each lamenting that in "one hour" her wealth was destroyed. Heaven, however, is called to rejoice, for God has avenged the blood of his saints, and Babylon will be thrown down like a millstone, never to rise again.

Context & background
John wrote Revelation c. AD 95 from exile on Patmos — a small Aegean island off the western coast of modern Turkey. The lament over Babylon mirrors the prophetic dirges over ancient Tyre (Ezekiel 27, modern Lebanon) and Babylon (Jeremiah 50-51, modern central Iraq). The detailed list of merchandise in verses 12-13 reflects Rome's vast trade network spanning from Britain to India — including the horrifying commerce in "people's bodies and souls" (slavery). The casting of a millstone into the sea echoes Jeremiah's symbolic act with a stone thrown into the Euphrates (Jer 51:63-64). Babylon represents every economic and political system in history that has built itself on injustice and oppression of God's people.
