Summary
John, exiled on the island of Patmos, receives a vision from Jesus Christ. He sees the glorified Son of Man walking among seven golden lampstands, with eyes like fire, feet like burnished brass, and a voice like rushing waters. Christ identifies himself as the eternal one — the first and the last, the one who died and is alive forever — and commands John to write what he sees and send it to seven churches in Asia.

Context & background
John wrote Revelation around AD 95 from exile on Patmos — a small rocky Aegean island off the western coast of modern Turkey. The letter addresses seven historical churches in the Roman province of Asia (modern western Turkey): Ephesus, Smyrna (modern Izmir), Pergamum (modern Bergama), Thyatira (modern Akhisar), Sardis (modern Sart), Philadelphia (modern Alaşehir), and Laodicea (near modern Denizli). Christians were facing persecution under Emperor Domitian, who demanded worship as "lord and god." The vision uses apocalyptic imagery drawn from Daniel and Ezekiel to encourage suffering believers that Christ reigns supreme.
