Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
2"Command the children of Israel and tell them, 'When you come into the land of Canaan, this is the land that shall fall to you for an inheritance, even the land of Canaan according to its borders.
3Your south side shall be from the wilderness of Zin along by the side of Edom, and your south border shall be from the end of the Salt Sea eastward.
4Your border shall turn about southward of the ascent of Akrabbim, and pass along to Zin; and the goings out of it shall be southward of Kadesh Barnea; and it shall go out to Hazar Addar, and pass along to Azmon.
5The border shall turn from Azmon to the brook of Egypt, and its termination shall be at the sea.
6For the western border, you shall have the great sea and its border. This shall be your west border.
7This shall be your north border: from the great sea you shall mark out your line to Mount Hor.
8From Mount Hor you shall mark out your line to the entrance of Hamath; and the goings out of the border shall be at Zedad.
9The border shall go along to Ziphron, and its termination shall be at Hazar Enan. This shall be your north border.
10You shall mark out your east border from Hazar Enan to Shepham.
11The border shall go down from Shepham to Riblah, on the east side of Ain. The border shall go down and shall reach to the slope of the sea of Chinnereth eastward.
12The border shall go down to the Jordan, and its termination shall be at the Salt Sea. This shall be your land according to its borders around it.' "
13Moses commanded the children of Israel, saying, "This is the land which you shall inherit by lot, which Yahweh has commanded to give to the nine and a half tribes;
14for the tribe of the children of Reuben according to their fathers' houses, and the tribe of the children of Gad according to their fathers' houses, have received their inheritance; and the half-tribe of Manasseh have received their inheritance.
15The two and a half tribes have received their inheritance beyond the Jordan at Jericho eastward, toward the sunrise."
16Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
17"These are the names of the men who shall divide the land to you for inheritance: Eleazar the priest and Joshua the son of Nun.
18You shall take one prince from every tribe to divide the land for inheritance.
19These are the names of the men: Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh.
20Of the tribe of the children of Simeon, Shemuel the son of Ammihud.
21Of the tribe of Benjamin, Elidad the son of Chislon.
22Of the tribe of the children of Dan, Bukki the son of Jogli.
23Of the sons of Joseph: of the tribe of the children of Manasseh, Hanniel the son of Ephod.
24Of the tribe of the children of Ephraim, Kemuel the son of Shiphtan.
25Of the tribe of the children of Zebulun, Elizaphan the son of Parnach.
26Of the tribe of the children of Issachar, Paltiel the son of Azzan.
27Of the tribe of the children of Asher, Ahihud the son of Shelomi.
28Of the tribe of the children of Naphtali, Pedahel the son of Ammihud."
29These are they whom Yahweh commanded to divide the inheritance to the children of Israel in the land of Canaan.

Summary

God gives Moses the precise geographical boundaries of the land of Canaan that the nine and a half tribes (excluding the Transjordan tribes) will inherit. The southern border runs from the wilderness of Zin through Kadesh Barnea to the Mediterranean; the western border is the Mediterranean Sea; the northern border reaches from the sea to Mount Hor and toward Hamath; and the eastern border follows the Sea of Galilee and the Jordan River down to the Dead Sea. God then appoints twelve specific men — one per tribe — to supervise the allotment, including the faithful Caleb.

Themes

  • God's covenant promise of land taking on specific, geographical reality
  • Boundaries as an expression of divine gift and protection
  • The concreteness of God's promises — not vague, but mapped
  • Caleb's presence on the allotment commission as a reward for his faith
  • God's provision being administered through specific, named human leaders

Key verses

  • Num 34:13 — “This is the land which you shall inherit by lot, which Yahweh has commanded to give to the nine and a half tribes.”
  • Num 34:17 — “These are the names of the men who shall divide the land to you for inheritance: Eleazar the priest and Joshua the son of Nun.”
  • Num 34:2 — “When you come into the land of Canaan, this is the land that shall fall to you for an inheritance, even the land of Canaan according to its borders.”

Context & background

The boundaries described here correspond roughly to what is today modern Israel, the West Bank (Palestinian territories), and parts of southern Lebanon and southwestern Syria. The southern border runs from the Negev (modern southern Israel/Sinai border) near Ein el-Qudeirat (Kadesh Barnea) to the "brook of Egypt" (Wadi el-Arish) to the Mediterranean. The northern border's reference to "the entrance of Hamath" suggests a territory reaching into modern Lebanon and southern Syria. The Sea of Chinnereth is the Sea of Galilee (modern northern Israel), and the Salt Sea is the Dead Sea. Caleb's inclusion in the allotment commission (v. 19) — alongside Joshua — fulfills God's promise in 14:24 that Caleb would enter the land he had trusted God to give.
