Fire from Heaven; God's Response to Solomon
Tap a verse to copy it, open the Hebrew, or write a note.
Summary
God answers Solomon's prayer dramatically: fire falls from heaven consuming the sacrifice, and God's glory fills the temple. The people fall on their faces in worship, singing "For he is good! For his loving kindness endures forever!" The festival of dedication lasts 14 days with massive sacrifices. God then appears to Solomon by night with his answer — including the famous conditional promise of 7:14. But God also warns: if Israel forsakes him for idols, the temple will become a ruin and a proverb of devastation.
Themes
- God's dramatic confirmation of his presence
- The conditions for national blessing and restoration
- The possibility of total loss if God is abandoned
Key verses
- 2 Chr 7:1 — “Fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and Yahweh's glory filled the house.”
- 2 Chr 7:14 — “If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves, pray, seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”
- 2 Chr 7:19-20 — “But if you turn away and forsake my statutes... then I will pluck them up by the roots out of my land.”
Context & background
The fire from heaven consuming the sacrifice directly parallels God's acceptance of Elijah's sacrifice on Mount Carmel (1 Kings 18:38) and the fire that consumed Moses' inaugural offerings at the tabernacle (Leviticus 9:24). This divine fire was the ultimate confirmation that the temple and its worship were accepted. The 7:14 verse has become one of the most cited Old Testament passages in Christian prayer for national revival. God's warning in verses 19-22 was literally fulfilled when Nebuchadnezzar destroyed the temple in 586 BC — the very scenario the Chronicler was writing about for his post-exilic audience.
