Summary
Israel goes through four kings in rapid succession in this chapter — Baasha's son Elah is assassinated by his chariot commander Zimri, who reigns just seven days before the army makes Omri king and Zimri burns the palace down around himself. Omri wins a civil war and founds the most powerful dynasty in the north, building a new capital at Samaria. His son Ahab surpasses all previous kings in wickedness, marrying Jezebel of Sidon and introducing full Baal worship — complete with a temple and altar in Samaria. The chapter ends with the rebuilding of Jericho fulfilling Joshua's ancient curse.

- 1 Kgs 16:30-31 — “Ahab the son of Omri did that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh above all that were before him. As if it had been a light thing for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam... he took as wife Jezebel.”

Context & background
Omri was significant enough in ancient Near Eastern history that Assyrian records referred to Israel as "the house of Omri" for over a century after his dynasty ended. His purchase of the hill of Samaria (modern Sebastia, West Bank) for two talents of silver was strategically brilliant — a hill with no previous tribal ownership, making it politically neutral. Samaria became the capital of the northern kingdom and one of the dominant cities of the region. Jezebel was the daughter of Ethbaal, king of Tyre and Sidon (modern Lebanon), and she brought active Baal worship — not just passive tolerance — to Israel's royal court. The rebuilding of Jericho (modern Jericho, West Bank) fulfilled the curse spoken by Joshua in Joshua 6:26, a detail that underscores how divine words span centuries.
