In the seventh month, in the twenty-first day of the month, Yahweh's word came by Haggai the prophet, saying,
2"Speak now to Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua, the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people, saying,
3'Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How do you see it now? Isn't it in your eyes as nothing?
4Yet now be strong, Zerubbabel,' says Yahweh. 'Be strong, Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land,' says Yahweh, 'and work, for I am with you,' says Yahweh of Armies.
5'This is the word that I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt, and my Spirit lived among you. Don't be afraid.'
6"For this is what Yahweh of Armies says: 'Yet once more, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, the earth, the sea, and the dry land;
7and I will shake all nations. The precious things of all nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory, says Yahweh of Armies.
8The silver is mine, and the gold is mine,' says Yahweh of Armies.
9'The latter glory of this house will be greater than the former,' says Yahweh of Armies; 'and in this place I will give peace,' says Yahweh of Armies."
10In the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, Yahweh's word came by Haggai the prophet, saying,
11"Yahweh of Armies says: Ask now the priests concerning the law, saying,
12'If someone carries holy meat in the fold of his garment, and with his fold touches bread, stew, wine, oil, or any food, will it become holy?'" The priests answered, "No."
13Then Haggai said, "If one who is unclean by reason of a dead body touch any of these, will it be unclean?" The priests answered, "It will be unclean."
14Then Haggai answered, "'So is this people, and so is this nation before me,' says Yahweh; 'and so is every work of their hands. That which they offer there is unclean.
15Now, please consider from this day and backward, before a stone was laid on a stone in Yahweh's temple.
16Through all that time, when one came to a heap of twenty measures, there were only ten. When one came to the wine vat to draw out fifty, there were only twenty.
17I struck you with blight, mildew, and hail in all the work of your hands; yet you didn't turn to me,' says Yahweh.
18'Consider, please, from this day and backward, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, since the day that the foundation of Yahweh's temple was laid, consider it.
19Is the seed yet in the barn? Yes, the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree haven't produced. From today I will bless you.'"
20Yahweh's word came the second time to Haggai in the twenty-fourth day of the month, saying,
21"Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, 'I will shake the heavens and the earth.
22I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms. I will destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the nations. I will overthrow the chariots, and those who ride in them. The horses and their riders will come down, every one by the sword of his brother.
23In that day, says Yahweh of Armies, I will take you, Zerubbabel, my servant, the son of Shealtiel,' says Yahweh, 'and will make you as a signet, for I have chosen you,' says Yahweh of Armies."

Summary

About a month after work resumed, Haggai delivers a second oracle to encourage builders disappointed by how modest the new temple looks compared to Solomon's. Yahweh promises to shake the nations, fill this house with glory greater than the former, and grant peace in this place. A third oracle uses a priestly ruling on holiness to expose how defilement, not holiness, is contagious — yet from the day the foundation was laid, God will bless the harvest. The chapter closes with a messianic promise that Yahweh will make Zerubbabel his "signet ring," reversing Jeconiah's curse and signaling the line through which the Davidic Messiah will come.

Themes

  • Encouragement for a "small beginnings" generation
  • The greater glory of the future temple
  • Holiness is not contagious, but defilement is
  • Blessing tied to obedience and renewed worship
  • The Davidic line preserved in Zerubbabel as God's signet

Key verses

  • Hag 2:23 — “I will take you, Zerubbabel, my servant... and will make you as a signet, for I have chosen you.”
  • Hag 2:4 — “Be strong... and work, for I am with you, says Yahweh of Armies.”
  • Hag 2:8 — “The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, says Yahweh of Armies.”
  • Hag 2:9 — “The latter glory of this house will be greater than the former.”

Context & background

These oracles came in October-December 520 BC in Jerusalem (modern Israel), as the post-exilic community under Persian (modern Iran) rule worked on the second temple. Some elderly survivors had seen Solomon's first temple before the Babylonian (modern central Iraq) destruction in 586 BC and wept at how small the new foundation looked (Ezra 3:12). Hebrews 12:26-27 quotes Haggai 2:6 as ultimately fulfilled at Christ's return. Zerubbabel, grandson of the cursed king Jeconiah/Jehoiachin (Jer 22:24, where Yahweh said he would pluck him off as a signet), now receives the reversal of that curse — and he appears in the genealogies of Jesus in both Matthew 1:12 and Luke 3:27.

Cross-references

  • Ezra 3:10-13 — Older men weep at the foundation, the backdrop for Haggai 2:3.
  • Hebrews 12:26-27 — Quotes Hag 2:6 as pointing to a final shaking at Christ's return.
  • Jeremiah 22:24 — Jeconiah plucked off as a signet; Hag 2:23 reverses this curse.
  • Matthew 1:12 — Zerubbabel listed in the genealogy of Jesus.
  • Zechariah 4:6-10 — Companion oracle: "Not by might... but by my Spirit," with Zerubbabel finishing the temple.

  1. Observe

What does the priestly ruling in verses 11-13 establish about the contagion of holiness versus uncleanness?

  2. Observe

What promise does Yahweh give to Zerubbabel at the end of the chapter?

  3. Interpret

In what sense is the "latter glory" of the second temple greater than Solomon's?

  4. Interpret

Why is the signet ring image given specifically to Zerubbabel, and how does it connect to the curse on his ancestor Jeconiah?

  5. Apply

Haggai 2:4 repeats "Be strong... I am with you" three times to discouraged builders. When you are tempted to despise a small or unimpressive work God has given you, how does this verse reframe it?

  6. Apply

Verse 19 declares "From today I will bless you" — marking a turning point tied to the day the foundation was laid. Is there a point of fresh obedience God is asking of you from which a new chapter could begin?
